Sunshine & Cricket – A Perfect Wednesday

Western Storm & Welsh Fire’s Fi Morris Visits Oakham School

29th June 2022

When the sun is shining brightly, cricket has to be on the agenda for the Mintridge Foundation and thanks to Oakham School, this was made possible!

According to the ECB, the number of cricket clubs involved in developing womens’ and girls’ cricket has increased from 93 to more than 615 over the last decade and we are determined to be part of the growth through inspiring girls to kickstart their cricketing journey via visible sporting role models.

Western Storm and Welsh Fire’s Fi Morris was just the person to lead the charge before her final preparations for the Hundred begin.

Joining Fi for a Girls Masterclass were 10 and 11 year old pupils from Witham Hall, Brooke Priory, Copthill and Oakham themselves.

Fi was welcomed by the Oakham staff before leading a circuit full of cricketing goodness on the school’s beautiful 1st XI Pitch. To allow the girls to practice all aspects of the game; batting, bowling, and because there’s always time to bring a CrazyCatch into the equation when Team Mintridge are about, fielding was on the agenda too. Fi loved being able to walk around the large group to offer 1-1 support on technical aspects, as well as hearing more about the players’ cricketing journeys so far.

The afternoon passed far too quickly for our liking but there was still plenty of time for photos, autographs and a Q&A session with the empowering role model.

I’m the youngest of seven siblings and my cricketing journey began in the garden with my older brothers!
— Fi Morris

Thank you very much to the Oakham School staff for welcoming Fi for the afternoon and we hope that everyone has a wonderful summer holiday, full of cricket (and watching Fi and Welsh Fire lift the trophy in the Hundred of course…).

Thank you to you and Fi for a fantastic event. The girls had a great time, and it was great to see them all having such fantastic fun.

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors  - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology such as Fitswarm and Playwaze to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
