"Leadership comes in different forms, you are all leaders and you all have a role to play in driving the teams you work in to success!" - Learning To Lead Programme with Stamford School

The Foundation for Leadership through Sport and The Mintridge Foundation, visit Stamford School for a special Learning to Lead Programme for their sports scholars

Leadership is a fundamental driver of performance for individuals, teams, coaches, administrators and whole organisations. That is why the sports scholars from Stamford School, benefited so much from their bespoke workshop delivered to them by Bob Reeves, former president of the RFU and Director of Foundation for Leadership Through Sport. With Bob’s vast experience leading and working with professionals from all sectors and some of the current most successful sports coaches and players in the world, Bob was able to share his knowledge with the students during this brilliant Learning to Lead programme.

This programme was created by the Foundation of Leadership Through Sport in collaboration with the Mintridge Foundation for school students to learn more about the necessary tools and confidence that is needed to become better leaders in all that they do.

As high performing athletes, captains and leaders within their own sporting contexts and at school, the students from Stamford School learnt a lot about the fundamentals of leadership from Bob, during their workshop, and what really makes a great leader and efficient team.

Bob challenged the students to think about how they influence their peers and the behaviours they demonstrate to get the best out of themselves and also those around them. As athletes, it is not uncommon for them to be competitive people or want to drive for a common goal with those around them, but Bob really got the students thinking about being more self-aware and the behaviours and attributes they currently have that are both positive and negative on those around them.

Self-awareness is a key attribute for leadership, and it was incredibly beneficial for the students to learn more about what areas their peers thought they could work on, to be better leaders, which will also make them better players within their team.

“Leaders are not necessarily the best players.”

The Foundation for Leadership through Sport Director, Bob Reeves, shared numerous stories with the students to raise their awareness of good examples of leadership and unpicked why famous teams and successful teams, managed to achieve the outcome they set out to achieve, through good leadership from every member of the squad.

“Influence those around you.”

Thank you very much to the Stamford School staff for inviting Foundation for Leadership through Sport and The Mintridge Foundation team to deliver our Learning to Lead Programme with you. We look forward to hearing how your current leaders go on to achieve brilliant things now, and in the future, with their new leadership tools.

We look forward to working closely with Stamford School on more programmes in the future.

If your school would like to enquire about a Leadership Programme for your Prefects or Sports Teams, please contact Alex Wallace.

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors  - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology such as Fitswarm and Playwaze to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
