"You can be anything you want to be if you set your mind to it!" - Commonwealth gold medallist Eboni Usoro-Brown inspires the students at Queen Eleanor's C of E Junior School

Queen Eleanor’s C of E Primary School Bonze Presentation Programme with Eboni Usoro-Brown – 2021

“Set a goal that is a little bit scary, if you feel scared by it, it probably means that you are growing as a person and you just never know where it might lead to!”

Our Ambassador Eboni Usoro-Brown, current England Netball Player and Commonwealth gold medallist, spent the morning inspiring the students at Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School as part of an amazing bronze programme in partnership with Prior’s Field School.

Throughout the morning, the students at Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School, listened to the amazing sporting journey that Eboni has been on so far to become a qualified lawyer but also earning over 100 caps for England and a Commonwealth gold medal. With her gold medal in hand, the students were in awe of Eboni’s achievements and were able to relive the moment all over again with her and watch the magic gold medal-winning moment on the big screen, as part of their presentation.

Eboni shared a lot with the students during the morning about her life as an athlete and what it takes to compete at the top level, not only in sport but in the world of work too. It was during this section of her presentation that she spoke to the students about the importance of having and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including eating the right food and exercising daily if you can.

The students were extremely enthusiastic when Eboni asked them what they would like to be when they grew up and shared with them her key bits of advice for setting goals and staying motivated when trying to achieve those life and career goals!

Towards the end of each of the presentations, Eboni gave the students the opportunity to ask her any questions. Here are some of the best questions that Eboni was asked;

What was it like when you won your gold medal?

Why did you choose netball as your sport?

What did you do when you won your gold medal?

What is your favourite position to play?

How tall are you?

Why did you want to be a lawyer?

What do you eat? What snacks do you have?

Are you still friends with all of the people you played netball with?

Were you ever a team captain?

How much time have you spent on TV?

When talking about the Commonwealth gold medal-winning moment, Eboni spoke about the team behind the team and the importance of having your support network around you. It was at this point that Eboni shared with the students who her role models were and why it was so important for the students to have positive role models in their life too.

It was a wonderful morning for Team Mintridge, Eboni and the staff and students at Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School. The students took a lot from their time with Eboni, and we hope that they get to put into practice some of her top tips and pieces of advice!

We were also delighted that Prior’s Field School chose to support Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School with this programme and share their morning with Eboni, so the students could hear from Eboni and the lessons she can teach through her experience at work, and on the netball court.

We look forward to visiting the school again very soon with more of our inspirational Mintridge Ambassadors.

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities, and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology such as FitSwarm and Playwaze to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
