Community & Beyond: Marilyn Okoro OLY visits Droylsden Academy thanks to the Eddie Girls at Gresham’s School

We can’t quite believe that we were finally able to make it happen, but have we got there…

Covid Delay after Covid delay…

Mintridge Foundation Ambassador and Olympic Medallist, Marilyn Okoro OLY finally made her way to Droylsden Academy to inspire the Year 9 & 10 students to be the best versions of themselves, even in the face of adversity, topics that are extremely close to her heart.

It was such a great day, there was one student that already had questions 5 minutes into my presentation. I felt my Nigerian heritage was relatable for a number of the students!

Marilyn delivered her inspirational messages thanks to the kind fundraising of the Edinburgh House students at Gresham’s School back in 2019! The fundraising was part of a great mission from our Founder, Alex Wallace who created the #MilesForMintridge Campaign back in May 2019 if we can remember all the way back then? Alex cycled 125 miles between her three schools (she was as emotional as ever…) and ended her route at her old house, Edinburgh, a little later in the day than anticipated…

Alex was simply grateful for the delicious tea and cake that the students had in store for her, but she was delighted to hear that the Eddie girls were inspired to support the Mintridge Foundation even more and they put their plans into action. The house organised a magnificent raffle alongside their static cycle challenge that achieved a staggering £1,000 for our charitable foundation with the idea that the funds would go towards a school where another Edinburgh Alumni teaches. We love the full circle of this and Droylsden Academy came into the equation as fellow OG Bee McCullum (nee Hunter) is pursuing her teaching career there! We love it when a plan comes together, not even a pandemic could stop us!

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved and thank you to Droylsden Academy for being so welcoming to Team Mintridge. We hope to see you very soon to help inspire the next generation!

We absolutely LOVED it! Thank you so much to everyone for your hard work on making this happen!
— Head of PE, Droylsden Academy

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors  - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.

If you would like to understand more about our mentoring programmes with elite athletes and how they can support the young people at your school or club, please contact Katie Smith.
