28 HOURS OF NON STOP FUNDRAISING - THE MAX HUNTER FUND

28 HOURS OF NON STOP FUNDRAISING - THE MAX HUNTER FUND

As with so many 2020 events, Covid – 19 made us wait to celebrate our #28NotOut event in its original format.

The global pandemic has shed a light on how the objectives of #28NOTOUT and the Max Hunter Fund are now more prevalent than ever; using the power of sport and activity to help both our physical and mental health is of the highest importance. That is why we were determined to continue with #28NOTOUT in the safest possible way while celebrating the life of our much loved friend Max Hunter who died by suicide in August 2019.

Thank you very much to the committee of Dan Griffin, Alison Smith, Robbie Polson, Rachael Templeton, Francesca Martin, Lewis Hunter and Alex Wallace for making it happen in these challenging times and raising over £10,000 (inclusive of offline donations)!

And, how did we do it?

28 hours of non stop fundraising of course!

Friday 10th July

18:00 – A Minute Against Silence:

18:05 – Online Raffle Opened

18:10 - Online Auction Opened

18:30 – Mental Health Live Panel on Zoom with Men’s England Rugby Player, Dan Cole

Friends and supporters Joined the 28 Not Out Committee for a Panel Discussion Evening hosted by the fantastic SportSpiel.

Alasdair Hooper and Will Moulton chatted about why we all just love, love, love sport, what is so special about the rugby community and how can we all look out for each other.

The panel went onto discuss suicide and mental health which continue to be incredibly difficult topics to talk about.

We kickstarted with another "Minute Against Silence" in remembrance of Max Hunter before being introduced to the panel:

-       Dan Cole, Men's Leicester Tigers, England and British & Irish Lions Rugby Union Player (as well as the real stars of the show AKA the Cole Twins who made a star appearance…we won’t ruin the surprise when you watch).

What is 28 NOT OUT & The Max Hunter Fund?

As a group of friends, we have been deeply shaken by the loss of our dear friend, Max Hunter who died by suicide in August 2019, aged 28.

Suicide and mental health continue to be incredibly difficult topics to talk about, particularly for young people and that is why we are determined to change that narrative.

Max was a great supporter of the Mintridge Foundation and enjoyed fundraising for the sports charity including the #Miles4Mintridge cycle in May 2019. Max was the biggest believer in using sport for positive change, he particularly loved rugby (an avid Northampton Saints fan) and cricket. Max also loved using sport to help his mood, notably golf. Sport and mental health has a strong connection.

We have found that it’s not always as simple as “opening up”, but what we want to encourage is for everyone to acknowledge their feelings on a regular basis and that is why we have created the Max Hunter Fund within the Mintridge Foundation.

Valuable funds raised will go towards keeping our much-loved friend’s fun, caring and sporting memory alive as well as changing perceptions and challenging stereotypes in the process. We will deliver mentoring programmes across the UK focussing on Max’s favourite sports and encouraging a new dialogue around how to look after our mental health just as we do our physical.

The Mintridge Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing life skills in young people through sport. We provide a support network for young people by harnessing the power of positive sporting role models. The Mintridge Foundation assists young people of all ages, abilities, and physical capabilities to develop confidence and resilience, and creates awareness of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing through sport.

Our team of Ambassadors - Olympians, Paralympians and other professional sports stars from over 20 sports, both team and individual - work with young people in schools, clubs and academies across the UK. Starting with visits including assemblies, coaching clinics and classroom sessions tailored to each organisation’s requirements, our ambassadors can then provide one- on- one remote mentoring in a safeguarded environment, delivered via technology such as FitSwarm and Playwaze to build a lasting legacy for individuals.

The Mintridge Foundation’s successes demonstrate the incredible power of sport; from a mentee’s selection to represent Great Britain in their chosen field to enabling disabled children to find confidence and happiness just through participation. Understanding life after sport, we also support our Ambassadors in their transition from active sport to the next stage of their careers.
